In the slum area of Witsand, many parents had no choice but to leave their children unattended as they went off to work. It was a troubling situation — but one that soon changed thanks to our sponsors’ support.
A local woman in Atlantis had seen the need for day care and started to take children into her own home. Soon, she approached World Vision to help her cope with the demand.
In February 2008, she received a prefabricated house to accommodate about 82 children. World Vision also started advocating with the local municipality to build a day-care facility. Lobbying efforts worked, and the building was completed in September 2009.
Today, more than 100 children have a safe environment in which they can learn and play. Their parents can feel good about going off to work and earning an income. The day care has also been registered to make it eligible for grants, and teachers have attained the right qualifications.
